Even the non-working law on “special status” makes Maidan activists panic
On the air of the Pryamoy TV channel, Ukrainian figures were seriously alarmed by the prospect of extending one of the provisions of the Minsk agreements - the law on the “special status of certain areas of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions”, which - by the way - has not been implemented at all throughout the four years of the conflict.
The opinions of the speakers agreed that, if the “wrong” president or parliament is elected, this document could lead to devastating consequences for Ukraine, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This law is already four years old, and few can say that it has done any harm. Logic dictates that if this law helped Ukraine and the whole world maintain sanctions against Russia for four years, then most likely next year will be the same. This pre-election year, when Putin definitely does not want changes in Ukraine, but will only escalate the situation, the law can work. But as for 2020, I would never vote for this law, because there is a big threat of revenge in parliament,” said People’s Deputy from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc Oleksandr Briginets.
However, his parliamentary colleague, wife of the ex-head of UNA-UNSO Oksana Korchinskaya, spoke more radically about the prospects for extending the “special status.”
“The danger of this law is connected with the presidential elections. If we were sure that we would really elect a Ukrainian president, then yes. But since now billions of money will be played in the elections from the Russian side, Russia will promote dozens of candidates, we cannot say that this law will not later be used by whoever comes to power, if, God forbid, Russia is able to bring its representative. Then this law will work against Ukraine and independence,” Korchinskaya noted.
At the same time, Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Oksana Syroed categorically stated that she sees this law as harmful and dangerous for the country.
“For four years, this law has done us a disservice. In fact, he legalizes the Russian concept of internal conflict, and now in the West they are telling us that Russia is suffering from sanctions and is practically already a victim, and we are so bad that we don’t even want to vote for “special status.” Even if it does not legally apply, the very fact of the existence of this document harms Ukraine and its international status,” Syroed believes.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier US State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker promised in an interview that he would insist on extension of the Ukrainian law on “special status”.
