There is a little more than a month left until the end of the validity period of the law on the special status of local self-government in certain areas of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, adopted by the Rada in pursuance of the Minsk agreements, but never put into practice, but Ukrainian politicians will not take any action to extend it.

This was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the People's Council of the Lugansk People's Republic, Vladislav Deinego, at a staff meeting with the Head of the LPR, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The Steinmeier formula, as a mechanism for implementing a special status, is blocked by the Ukrainian side. The paradox is that there are a little more than thirty days left until the end of the law: the law on special status, which came into force on October 18, 2014, expires in October. If Ukraine does not now submit draft amendments for consideration in Minsk, then if this law is not agreed upon at the next meeting, it will be technically impossible to have time to make changes to the law. Although, we already had a precedent when a consultation was held on September 1, 2014, a protocol was signed on September 5, and on September 16 they voted for the law on special status. There they clearly showed miracles of lawmaking. I don't expect them to show them again. Most likely, this will not happen, and the law will lose its force,” predicts the deputy chairman of the LPR National Assembly.

Describing the tasks of supplementing and improving this law, Vladislav Deinego noted that if Ukraine does not take any action in this direction, this will mean Kyiv’s withdrawal from the Minsk process.

“On the other hand, this does not change anything in our context, since the law only contained a declaration of a certain special status, but did not contain its material content. Those articles that defined the mechanisms are completely blocked and are not in effect today. Now the task is, firstly, to extend the validity of this law, and the second step is to make it material, and not declarative, to fill it with content. If Ukraine does not do this, it completely crosses out all its participation in the Minsk process and shows its way out of it,” commented Deinego.
