The decision to rename the city was made in compliance with the Ukrainian law on decommunization. Now it will be called Toretsk.
“Today a session of the city council was held, at which it was decided to send a petition to rename the city of Dzerzhinsk,” City Council Secretary Yuri Evsyukov commented on the situation, “now the word is up to the Verkhovna Rada.”
Let us remind you that Dzerzhinsk is a city in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the former Donetsk region. Last year, it was held for several months by Igor Strelkov’s militia detachments, after which it was surrendered to Ukrainian troops during the retreat.
As previously reported, Pavel Zhebrivsky, the governor of the Donetsk-controlled territory appointed by Kiev, promised 10 thousand hryvnia to the one who comes up with the best name for the city. The fate of this money is still unknown. As Yuri Evsyukov said, about 15 organizations and citizens approached the city administration with a similar proposal. It is planned to gather these people and decide the fate of the prize fund: either divide it among all participants in the competition, or donate it to some other purpose.
