The Mefedov case. A precedent that never happened
The accusations of separatism brought forward in Ukraine by Russian citizen Yevgeny Mefedov look strange, writes Moskvsky Komsomolets.

“Citizens of their own country are judged for separatism, but not foreigners. There were no such precedents before,” the publication notes.
In turn, the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflict Studies, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, does not exclude that Ukraine can use Mefedov for exchange.
“Residents of Catalonia have now voted for a referendum on independence from Spain, so now the authorities need to accuse them all of separatism and start criminal prosecution? No, this is not accepted in Europe. I know about the accusation of a Russian citizen, but I don’t understand how he can be tried for separatism in Ukraine. As far as I know, Mefedov was previously on the exchange list, so I cannot rule out that they will again try to use him as an exchange for one of the Ukrainians convicted in Russia,” Pogrebinsky said.
As PolitNavigator reported, despite the fact that the Ilyichevsky court of Chernomorsk (a satellite city of Odessa) fully acquitted and decided to release in the courtroom all those accused in the case of the riots in Odessa on May 2, 2014, two of them, Sergei Dolzhenkov and Russian citizen Yevgeny Mefedov, were immediately detained by the SBU and the prosecutor’s office on a new charge of separatism.
