The Sheremet case threatens to destroy the Ukrainian myth about ATO volunteers
Ukraine will only receive benefits if it objectively approaches the investigation into the murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet and punishes all the people involved in this case, despite their services to the Maidan.
Lawyer Andrei Portnov said this on air on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Why are Pavel Sheremet’s former friends afraid? Because they believe that this story can discredit the patriotic movement, the volunteer movement, it can discredit the post-Maidan movement and the new values with which our society has been artificially filled in the last five years - these new pseudo-values.
I think there is no need to be afraid of this. The greatest value is human life and health, therefore the fight against violence, the fight against especially serious crimes should be a higher priority in the balance of state interests than all other values. The irreversibility of punishment is the main principle, which must be balanced with patriotism and volunteerism.
The state will benefit from clearing the ranks of those who have a high level of public trust, those who internally use volunteering to buy houses, cars, and apartments for themselves. This will be much more valuable for the state, I think. Those who defend suspects are making a big mistake by doing so at this stage,” Portnov said.
