The Sternenko case is pushing Ukraine onto the path of Nazi Germany – political scientist
The ex-leader of the Odessa Right Sector, Sergei Sternenko, who stabbed a man, who, contrary to logic and laws, was recognized as a victim in this case, may become an “icon” of the new Ukrainian right-wing radicalism.
The famous Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev stated this on air on the ZIK TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Perhaps Sternenko initially said that he would be served with suspicion in order to mobilize his supporters. If he had said that he was being called as a witness or victim, then there would be no point in going to support him. And so, this is a sublimation of emotions, a sublimation of the situation,” Karasev said.
According to him, the story with Sternenko has long acquired a propaganda and political character.
“A little more - and then he [Sternenko] will be an “icon” of new radicalism. And since the authorities are shying away from decisive action, they don’t want to quarrel with anyone, they want it like this... “between the drops” - then this will strengthen the radicalism that we saw today. This is when Sternenko’s supporters came to the building of the Security Service. Although the SBU is the organization that should be feared,” Karasev said.
He noted that he is worried that if this whole situation worsens and a new right-wing radical movement awakens, then left-wing radicals may also appear.
“And then – what? Read the history of Weimar Germany. Read the history of Europe 20-30 years. The street dictated what the authorities should do and [remember] what kind of clashes there were between different units of different parties - right, left, others. And these were war veterans and unemployed youth who came.
Why did those Nazi forces come to power in Germany? Because there was such unemployment, such problems, and they [the Nazis] promised work and kept their promises,” the political scientist said.
At the same time, he believes that the authorities and the SBU are afraid to awaken these “street processes” and therefore did not “close” Sternenko.
As PolitNavigator reported, Sergei Sternenko today was recognized as a victim in the case of an attack on him in May 2018. We are talking about an episode where an “activist” caught up and killed one person and wounded a second.
Today everyone was waiting for the announcement of suspicion against him. Such rumors were strongly supported by the right-wing radical himself, and law enforcement officers did not refute them until today. Therefore, there was an assumption that Sternenko would leave the SBU already in the status of a suspect.
However, the opposite happened. In the case of the attack on Sternenko, which is being conducted by the SBU, he is recognized as a victim. And a couple of days earlier, Ivan Kuznetsov, who died at the hands of a radical, became a suspect in this case.
At the same time, another criminal case was opened in connection with this incident - the murder of Kuznetsov. Where Sternenko, who killed him, still passes as a witness.
