Democrats are terrified of the new Trump
An attempt to impeach former President Donald Trump has failed in the US Senate.
The majority of members of the upper house voted for the corresponding resolution (57 for, 43 against), but this was not enough, since it was necessary to obtain two-thirds of the votes.
Anton Fedyashin, a professor at the American University in Washington, believes that the failure of impeachment was quite predictable, given the current balance of power in parliament.
“Nevertheless, the Democrats will use the decision of the House of Representatives, which initiated a second impeachment, as a weapon against Trump if he decides to run for president in 2024,” the expert says in a comment to Kommersant.
“The Democrats are so afraid of repeating the 2016 election scenario that they are stocking up on all the tools and mechanisms to prevent the next possible conservative-populist victory, be it by Donald Trump himself or one of his supporters,” Fedyashin added.
