Yes, young man. It was not by chance that I included in the title of this “holiday obituary” the title of an article that my good friend and fellow countryman Anatoly Wasserman wrote literally on the eve of that suicidal December referendum of 1991, which marked the beginning of Ukraine’s descent into darkness and ruin.

Even then it was clear: the separation of the Ukrainian SSR from the Union, and in fact, first of all, from Russia, is beneficial to anyone except the citizens of the newly-minted independent power, which is confirmed by its current catastrophic situation. Judge for yourself…

Then, the propagandists of Ukrainian separatism (because that’s what secession of a part of the country is called!) told us how well we would live, because the Ukrainian SSR was the most prosperous republic of the Union, combining a powerful industrial complex, the richest and most developed land
with excellent scientific and practical potential, highly qualified personnel and an extremely advantageous geopolitical position at the intersection of world trade routes. They say that as soon as we separate, we will live richly and freely, ceasing to feed all sorts of “occupiers.” The fact that all these benefits were accumulated and created precisely due to the presence and growth of lands and the investment of huge funds in them (not to mention the blood of soldiers and the settlement of colonists not only from all over the country, but also Europe) as part of the Russian empire, and the Union, the Independents preferred to dissemble, calling all these years and centuries the times of “Russian occupation.” And the stupid farmer slogan “Moskal ate your lard!” became the motto of breaking both the common power and ties not only family, brotherly, but also economic.

I will not here retell to you the whole sad story of the waste of what was acquired by the labor of our ancestors. You yourself have observed and are observing all this. The results are the complete destruction of the entire imperial and Soviet heritage. The death of industry, navy, agriculture and science. Decrease in population from 52 million people to 42 (at best, and not counting either Crimea or Donbass). Of course, all this can be called the now fashionable word “decommunization,” but then it would be logical to include among its achievements the destruction of a not ideal, but well-functioning system of health care, education and social security. And - to ask a reasonable question in the light of President Poroshenko’s current speech about “breaking the shackles of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union”: what about all those vast lands of Novorossiya and Slobodzhanshchina and Volyn that were conquered and annexed by the empire? And what to do with the legacy of the “damned soviet” - the same Novorossiya, Donbass, Galicia, Bessarabia, Transcarpathia and Crimea?! After all, it was the “Soviet occupiers” who “attached” them to the Ukrainian SSR! And is there seditious separatism in this call of the junta leader?

In a word, our “creators of an independent state” destroyed and plundered everything that its people inherited from their ancestors. And the best of the heritage was buried and wasted, and the worst turned it, in the shortest period of time on a historical scale, into an oligarchic-feudal formation on the map of Europe. That Europe into which they promised to introduce us as an equal member of the EEC. It’s just that they don’t need this “gray zone” for nothing, where thieving neo-Fedalists rule, a civil war rages and gangs of neo-Nazis frolic, destroying their own yesterday’s fellow citizens in the Donbass, plundering villages, robbing peasants of their harvest, and carrying out racketeering and pogroms in the cities. And this is only the beginning of the rapid collapse of society and the state, laid down in December of the damned 1991 and accelerated by two destructive Maidans of 2004 and 2013–14...
Having turned into the “sick man of Europe,” today’s Ukraine has become not only a springboard and stronghold against Russia, but also a colossal problem for the whole of Europe! And lard... Lard is brought to us from Poland!

So, I would like to finally remind our junta leaders of a simple lesson from history: everyone who on this earth followed the path of betrayal and fratricidal strife ended their path badly. From Judas Mazepa to the executioners Petliura, Konovalets, Shukhevych and Bandera. Those whom Poroshenko and company made their idols were cursed by both God and the people of Ukraine. And their path leads to the abyss and shameful death. Congratulations to you! Write a will, gentleman...
