This was reported in a statement issued by the politician.

“Maintaining Russian and Soviet military graves, memorials and monuments abroad in proper order has a direct impact on the image of our country in the world. In fact, this work is one of the elements of “soft power” that illustrates Russia’s attitude towards its own traditions, history and culture.

One of the heroic events in the history of our Fatherland was the Crimean War of 1853-56. Then a number of European countries united in a coalition against Russia. But our Fatherland survived. Russia did not win the Crimean War, but it did not lose it either. This difficult war showed mass heroism, greatness of spirit and dedication of the Russian people,” the statement said.

After the end of the Crimean War, the senator recalls, numerous monuments were erected in the Russian Empire, Orthodox churches and chapels were built, and military cemeteries were landscaped.

“Crimean War 1853-1856. turned out to be undeservedly forgotten during the Soviet period. Some military cemeteries and memorials from the Crimean War were wiped off the face of the earth. On the territory of the Simferopol fraternal cemetery of soldiers of the Russian army who fell during the Crimean War, where over 35 thousand lower ranks of the Russian army were buried, who died in hospitals from wounds and illnesses, a race track was built. A number of buildings in Simferopol were built from the tombstones of this military cemetery. When the plaster falls off, the inscriptions on the tombstones are visible. The same picture was observed in other places of major battles, including Alminskoe, where about 6 thousand soldiers of the Russian army died,” Tsekov informs.

After the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation in 2014, the politician states, the Russian authorities began to show serious attention to preserving the memory of the Crimean War.

“At the same time, in the list of all-Russian memorable dates there is no memorial date that would emphasize the significance of the feat of the soldiers of the Russian Army committed during the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

In the historical memory of the people, Russian soldiers, who have defended Crimea at all times, are forever included in the immortal Crimean regiment of Russia.

I consider it necessary to make a proposal to establish a memorable date on September 9 - the Day of Remembrance of Soldiers of the Crimean War of 1853-1856,” says Sergei Tsekov.
