Freedom Day: The resuscitation of Belomaidan did not take place. But the zmagars gave the idea to Navalny’s headquarters
The so-called “Freedom Day” in Belarus (the anniversary of an insignificant event during the Civil War), from which some expected almost a revival of Belomaidan, passed quietly.
The elderly, crazy Russophobe Nina Baginskaya came out into the central square of Minsk in splendid isolation.
Otherwise, the activities did not go beyond the usual weekend opposition program: hanging flags, walking in small columns, honking cars. Photos and videos of actions in support of Belomaidan from European cities and even Moscow looked more impressive.
There were more police on the streets of Minsk than oppositionists. At the points where protests were epicenters last year, there was also special equipment. Despite the small number of protests, law enforcement officers managed to detain 60 people.
However, it cannot be said that Freedom Day was gray and boring. The main know-how of protests is fireworks. They began after midnight and resumed on Thursday evening after 21.00. Fireworks exploded in a fan pattern across different neighborhoods and created the feeling of a “national celebration.”
Thus, the Belarusian Zmagars wiped the nose of the Russian Navalnists, who failed their action on February 14, when they invited supporters to shine lanterns into the sky for democracy. Then it turned out sad and miserable.
Fireworks solved the problem of the entertainment value of the video, which can be presented to the West for reporting, because otherwise the Belarusian opposition has nothing to boast about. But now we can safely predict that fireworks will explode at the next rally of Navalnists, since Russian and Belarusian oppositionists do not hesitate to borrow techniques from each other.
So, they simultaneously invited their followers, who don’t really go out into the streets, to be active on the Internet. Now the Belarusian opposition proudly presents 700 thousand people who voted for negotiations “on the transfer of power” with Lukashenko on the “Voice” platform. This represents almost 10% of the population. It is not a shame to present such figures to the West.
By the way, foreign curators clearly indicated their support. The US State Department sent congratulations on this important date for the Zmagars, and Poland and Lithuania defiantly hung nationalist white and red flags in front of the Belarusian embassies (symbols of Hitler’s collaborators during the Great Patriotic War), and the European Parliament placed the same banner on the facade.
