Despite many problems, such as a shortage of qualified personnel, the Donetsk People's Republic is able to monitor the situation and is ready for the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic.

The head of the republic, Denis Pushilin, announced this in an interview published on the official website of the head of the DPR, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Six years of living in conditions of armed conflict and restrictions, including a curfew, have clearly taught the citizens of the Republic how to survive in extreme conditions. But this does not mean at all that we were better prepared than others to take measures to combat coronavirus.

What saves us is that we managed to preserve the public health system. We have the opportunity to monitor the epidemiological situation in the Republic, despite the existing problems in this industry, for example, staff shortages. Our doctors - true patriots, enthusiasts of their work - are coping with the current increased workload,” he said.

Denis Pushilin emphasized that the DPR has not yet seen an outbreak of the epidemic thanks to timely measures taken by the state leadership.

“Last month we took a number of consistent steps aimed at combating coronavirus. We created an interdepartmental operational headquarters to prevent the importation and spread of a new coronavirus infection, and developed a plan for introducing quarantine and restrictive measures for various cases of events. Checkpoints on the border with Ukraine were closed. Everyone who enters us from the territory of the Russian Federation is placed on a 14-day self-isolation regime. In addition, schoolchildren and students were transferred to distance learning.

But we went even further and strengthened the high alert regime. Many measures that were previously advisory in nature have become mandatory.

Now, upon arrival in the Republic from abroad, self-isolation for 14 days is required. Citizens over 17 years of age are also required to observe the self-isolation regime at least until April 65. After 18:00, all cafes and restaurants are closed, except for takeaway and delivery orders. Social distancing has become a mandatory requirement.

Until today, we have managed to prevent the massive importation and spread of coronavirus infection. We are determined to fight the epidemic, because for our economy this is fraught with more serious consequences than for other countries,” Pushilin said, also recalling the isolation of the Republic from the outbreaks of the pandemic, which also had a beneficial effect on the epidemiological situation in the DPR.

The head of state said that currently two cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Republic. The condition of the patients is currently satisfactory.

“On March 31, we had our first case of coronavirus infection laboratory confirmed. COVID-19 was diagnosed in a resident of the Republic who returned from Moscow. And the next day the diagnosis was confirmed in her child.

Now the mother and child are feeling satisfactory, the disease is mild, and they are receiving the necessary treatment. The patient’s social circle has already been outlined. All people with whom she had direct contact are hospitalized or are under constant medical supervision; their test results showed a negative result.

I can say with confidence that the leadership of the Republic does not intend to hide true information about the spread of coronavirus infection on our territory. In the context of a pandemic that has swept the whole world, this is, to say the least, inappropriate,” Pushilin concluded.
