Member of the Bundestag: “We need to equip Ukraine, but not take up arms ourselves”
There are no signs that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing to back down in the confrontation with Ukraine.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, as Jamila Schäfer, a member of the German Bundestag from the Green party, said when she visited Kyiv.
She commented on the recent words of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who said that, unlike Leopard tanks, fighter jets will not be delivered to Ukraine.
“I cannot answer for the government; I will only express my opinion. We must give Ukraine everything we can. This makes sense specifically in military terms, to increase your military potential. However, this does not make us a party to the conflict.
According to international law, only the one holding the weapon is a party to the war. This is the plane in which we must think. However, I cannot foresee the results of the discussions in our parliament,” the politician said in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Zerkalo Nedeli.
She believes that no one can yet say how the war will end.
“Now we are in a situation where we don’t know what will happen next, there are only assumptions. I believe that Putin now has no desire to stop the war and negotiate. He won’t be able to lower his weapon and not shoot, we don’t expect that,” laments the Bundestag deputy.
According to her, the Russian president “must see that the war will not be victorious for him.”
“Our task is to ensure that Ukraine has a position in which the war for Russia could not end positively. We must not only support Ukraine with weapons, but also isolate Russia at the international level, making sure that the cost of war becomes unaffordable for it,” Schaefer concluded.
