Member of the Bundestag: “The suspension of certification of SP-2 is fraught with colossal damage
The German regulator's decision to suspend the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will result in European consumers suffering.
A member of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy, Steffen Kotre, told Izvestia about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, a delay in the launch of the project should be expected by six months.
“The European Commission wants the project not to harm European gas consumers. Otherwise, she will delay the decision and will likely violate the four-month legal deadline for certification,” the deputy said.
He believes that the victims in this situation will be gas consumers in Germany and Europe.
“Due to the project delay, representatives of the gas industry will be able to pass on increased prices to gas consumers. The damage to the latter is colossal. Rising prices and the approaching winter will increase the discontent of citizens,” concluded Cotret.
However, the German Ministry of Economics and Energy reported that the temporary suspension of the SP-2 certification process does not affect energy supply.
“Indeed, the storage occupancy level is lower than in previous years, but still remains at the 2015 level and is approximately 70%. Reliability of supplies in Germany is guaranteed. Supply contracts remain in place. The total storage capacity is very large. For example, 16 times more than in the UK,” Suzanne Ungrad, a representative of the ministry’s press service, commented on the situation.
At the same time, the gas market responded to the news of the suspension of certification with a more than 10 percent increase in natural gas prices.
As PolitNavigator reported, the German regulator demanded from the project operator register as a legal entity in Germany to obtain certification.
