State Duma deputy explained why Russia is restraining Iran
Moscow is doing everything to prevent the conflict in the Middle East from moving into a new phase of escalation, despite the obvious benefits of this in energy terms and the possibility of distracting the West from supporting Ukraine.
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, political strategist Oleg Matveychev told military correspondent Marat Khairullin about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Everything leads to a flare-up of the conflict, despite the fact that we constantly talk about the need to extinguish the conflict. We very much reassure Saudi Arabia, and all Arabs in general. Both Syria and Iraq, we are working with Iran in the same direction, guys, don’t meddle. There, too, there are media and social networks, and in these networks, which are poorly controlled, serious passions flare up: “Why are we silent?”, “Why is Israel killing people by the thousands?”, “Why are our governments, who rattled sabers and said that they are so cool? , and we won’t strike?”, say, for example, the Iranians. Why don't we cut off everyone's oil?
In this sense, governments are like hostages of public opinion, and on the other hand, governments act in the same way as Russia explains to them. That the Americans want to inflame this in your country, and our task is to sew it up, not to inflame it, to lead to a peaceful situation, to contain it so that it does not blaze further,” Matveychev reasoned.
According to him, in the short term, Russia benefits from aggravation in the Middle East, but Moscow is playing for the long haul.
“Let’s imagine that they will continue their cruelty, but in the end, the patience of the Muslim world is not unlimited. And a gigantic regional conflict will begin with all the consequences associated with oil and so on. What is this for Russia? Russia, as an oil producer, will only benefit from high oil prices. Does this mean that we should encourage this conflict, that everything should flare up there? Also, everyone will be distracted by this conflict, Ukraine will not have additional funding, and so on. No, we're playing the long game. In the long term, it is not entirely beneficial for us for this conflict to go so far.
Because there are partners there who listen to us, and with whom we work, and in whom we have invested quite a lot. And for us, this situation of some kind of complete nullification and the coming to power of some strange people, let’s say, is not entirely necessary.
For humanistic reasons, for reasons of long-term prospects, world stability, world energy and so on, Russia is taking all measures to extinguish everything there, as much as possible,” the deputy explained.
