State Duma deputy proposed introducing elections for the head of Crimea
Today, 11 million citizens in 10 regions of Russia are deprived of direct voting rights. This was stated today in the State Duma of the Russian Federation by Gadzhimurad Omarov, a deputy from Dagestan from A Just Russia.

“We are talking about the republics of the North Caucasus, the Republic of Crimea and autonomous okrugs. In my opinion, this state of affairs violates the constitutional rights of citizens, as well as the principles of equality of subjects. People in these regions are extremely angry about inequality. Why can't they elect leaders of their regions? It’s strange that they are ripe before the election of the president of a world power, but not before the election of governors,” Omarov said.
He believes that the heads of the republics are deliberately resisting direct elections, wanting to strengthen their power.
“Regional leaders received a legitimate way to strengthen their clan-family empires and eliminate undesirables and competitors. There is a degradation of political culture. The heads of regions have relaxed and are not working. People go out to protest for social reasons. A particularly negative effect is observed in the North Caucasus, where there are thousand-year traditions of democracy,” Omarov said.
In September, the head of Crimea Sergei Aksenov, speaking at the inauguration of the first popularly elected governor of Sevastopol, said that he was ready to introduce direct elections in the republic, “if the task is set.”
