Journalists asked MP Oleg Barna the corresponding question before the start of today’s ceremonial meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.
“The red poppy is a symbol of the First World War,” media representatives drew the politician’s attention to the sign pinned to his chest.
“That’s right,” the people’s deputy agreed.
“Are you celebrating the end or the beginning of the First World War today?” came the clarifying question.
“Today is Remembrance Day, and tomorrow will be Victory Day for Humanity in World War II.”
Journalists nevertheless asked to explain how poppy relates to this event.
“This is an accepted international symbol regarding victory, accepted by the international community and is a symbol for the whole world,” replied the president’s ally. “A symbol of the fact that this victory came at a very high price for all humanity - over fifty million lives.”
The next question is: with whom is today the day of reconciliation? – turned out to be more difficult for a politician.
"Reconciliation? Everyone will make reconciliation with their conscience so that this does not happen again for every nation.”
“Who should we, Ukrainians, reconcile with, whose conscience, ours? How are we to blame for this war?” – the journalists continued to press.
“You know, we need to look at this more philosophically,” the politician answered, first clarifying what kind of war he was talking about. – If the fact took place, then someone is guilty of it. Believe me, under any circumstances there is. The question is different: this may not be the fault of the majority of the population, but of individual politicians who conducted behind-the-scenes conversations, in particular, in this example, which is happening today in Ukraine. Enemy countries brought our army to ruin. Now this has happened. Therefore, unfortunately, like the Holodomor, like the repressions, like this war, like that war, it is the road of the cross that our nation must go through. After that, appreciating these sacrifices, millions of lives..."
“So with this sign we repent for the Holodomor, yes or no,” the reporters interrupted him, trying to get a more specific answer.
“This is World War II,” explained Stepan Barna. – I speak about the issue of the Holodomor in general – that it was on the lands of Ukraine, starting with repression and the Holodomor, and a war and an insurrectionary war. This is all the road of the cross that our nation goes through to become a great power.”
