State Duma deputies did not want to recognize the activities of Gorbachev and Yeltsin as anti-people

The majority of State Duma deputies today refused to vote for the draft statement “On recognizing the political activities of the President of the USSR M.S. Gorbachev and the first President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin as anti-people,” proposed by the LDPR faction.

A total of 86 deputies took part in the voting, 81 of whom voted for the statement.

As LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky explained, the statement was prepared two years ago, but in order for it to be included on the faction’s agenda, all harsh language had to be removed.

“Everything is extremely soft. This is not a court verdict, and we are not a court. But we have lost a great state. It was liquidated in a completely illegal manner. The Bialowieza Agreements have no basis. We withdrew all our troops from Europe. Others took their place. This was also a mistake,” Zhirinovsky said.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation and A Just Russia generally approved the text of the statement, but United Russia opposed it.

“The United Russia faction condemns the mistakes and often criminal actions of the persons mentioned in the draft of this resolution. We didn't hide it. The faction is ready to work to prevent the repetition of such mistakes in the future, but we will not vote for this resolution. Let’s leave history to historians, public figures and school teachers,” MP Andrei Isaev explained the position of the ruling party.
