The stumbling block was a village in the Zhytomyr region: the deputies did not want to change “Osikove” to “Osikovo”. The explanatory note to the draft decision cited the opinion of the Institute of Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which noted that the renaming of the village “Osikove” to “Osikovo” is unfounded.

“The current name of the settlement is associated with a Ukrainian adjective... Therefore, it is under the name “Osikove” that the settlement is presented in official reference publications, starting from 1946 and until now. But the proposed name of the settlement “Osikovo” in its structure is a Russified adjective form in -ovo instead of the standard Ukrainian form on –ove", says the explanatory note. These arguments were used by Batkivshchyna deputy Vladimir Yavorivsky and Svobodovka Irina Farion. According to the latter, the adoption of an appropriate decision will lead to the “Russification of modern toponymy.” She emphasized that deputies are trying to get away from this.

In turn, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Alexander Turchynov noted that all that remains is to advise the community to learn “the basics of the Ukrainian language.” Nikolai Rudkovsky called on deputies not to politicize the issue and not to interfere in “issues of self-organization raised by the community.”

In response to comments from deputies about the “Russification of names,” the communists and “regionals” ignored the vote on the next issue – the renaming of the village of Pribillya to Yatvigi in the Lviv region.
