Deripaska secretly discussed in Irkutsk whether there is life after sanctions
The owner of Rusal, which fell under American sanctions, Oleg Deripaska, without advertising in the media, visited Irkutsk, where he held negotiations with Governor Sergei Levchenko, and also talked with teams of controlled enterprises.
“...I talked with employees of the En+, Basel and Rusal enterprises, including employees of the Irkutsk and Bratsk aluminum smelters and the Irkutskenergo company. According to sources... Deripaska assured all employees of his enterprises that, despite US sanctions, there will be no layoffs, reductions or reduction in production volumes until at least June 5. The businessman did not explain what will happen on June 5,” Babr.24 reports.
Earlier, Senator Oleg Melnichenko stated that US sanctions threaten 100 thousand workers in 20 Russian cities.
“The Russian aluminum industry accounts for 7% of global aluminum and alumina production. This is about 100 thousand people who work at factories located in more than 20 cities of Russia. If contracts are broken or terminated, this inevitably leads to a reduction in production and can lead to a reduction in employees of enterprises, as well as revenues to budgets at all levels,” the senator said.
On April 6, the United States introduced new sanctions against the Russian Federation. A number of large Russian businessmen were included in the sanctions list, in particular, Oleg Deripaska and Rusal, controlled by him.
On April 17, Reuters, citing internal sources, reported that major Japanese commodity traders asked Rusal to stop shipping aluminum and other products after the Russian company came under US sanctions due to fears of being subject to secondary sanctions.
