“Held like a used condom” – The Ukrainian delegation was accused of desecration of the US symbol
Members of the Ukrainian delegation in Washington, headed by President Vladimir Zelensky, behaved like tourists from the deep provinces, seeing world attractions for the first time.
Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov told PolitNavigator about this.
This is how the expert commented on the photo, which was published on his blog by the press secretary of the President of Ukraine Sergei Nikiforov. In the photo, the official poses as if he is holding the Washington Monument, which towers over the White House, with his fingertips.
“Tourists, as we know, love similar effects - Egyptian pyramids on the palm, the spire of the Eiffel Tower on the hand, and so on, we know similar stories. For tourists, this is a completely normal photograph.
Another thing is that this shows how “busy” the Ukrainian delegation is. Here we are told that such a busy visit, everyone is simply working their asses off. You look at the footage - they are running around Lafayette Square, walking, going out on the boardwalks, fooling around in the photographs. That is, the impression is that people simply have nothing to do, they are walking around America, Washington, and Zelensky’s visit to the United States is more likely to be a tourist one than some kind of work,” Kornilov said.
Well-known Ukrainian journalist Ruslan Kotsaba expressed himself even more harshly.
“Zelensky, for our taxes, that is, for budget money, decided to promote himself in a five-star hotel, cool, in Washington, two thousand per room. Take the scandal with Sergei Nikiforov, his press secretary, who showed, like, that he holds the White House spire like, sorry, a used condom. This is not diplomacy, this is squab after squabble,” Kotsaba said on the First Independent TV channel.
Pro-Western political scientist Taras Berezovets, who serves Petro Poroshenko, explained in detail why the behavior of Zelensky’s press secretary is offensive to the Americans.
“I see that not everyone has understood the true meaning of yesterday’s scandal with Zelensky’s new press secretary in Washington, and some gifted characters are trying to pass it off as a natural reaction of a liberated person.
Firstly, such an opinion is deeply superficial, since we are talking about an official who is on a working visit to the country’s main foreign policy partner, and even at the expense of Ukrainian taxpayers.
Secondly, we are talking about an insult to one of the main national symbols of the United States; let me remind you, we are talking about the Washington Memorial, one of the founding fathers of modern America. The memorial has a much more sacred and deeper meaning than an ordinary monument, and therefore the attitude towards it not from an ordinary citizen, but from a government official of a foreign state is interpreted according to completely different principles.
Thirdly, being on such a tense visit simply does not leave time for such nonsense and, on the contrary, the manifestation of such stupidity indicates the opposite - the person in the photo simply does not understand why he is there and what he is doing. Finally, timing is always key. America deeply mourns the victims of the terrorist attack in Afghanistan, where a record number of American troops died at the hands of a suicide bomber. Such an act at a time of national mourning in relation to one of the national shrines is simply unacceptable,” concluded Berezovets.
