Zelensky's cheap trick did not help him get rid of Minsk
The proposal to hold negotiations with Russia in an expanded format with the participation of the United States and Great Britain was, in fact, an unsuccessful attempt by Zelensky to abandon the Minsk format.
Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think it (a meeting in a six-party format - approx. “PN”) is absolutely unrealistic today. This is neither Minsk, nor Normandy, nor Budapest, nor any other format - this is something new.
The United States does not want to take direct part in these negotiations. Formal participation in this negotiation process provides not only opportunities, but also provides responsibility for the implementation of the decisions made.
Today the United States is in an advantageous position - it influences the situation in Ukraine through the hands of Ukrainians, but is not responsible for anything. And they will not want to change their status in the near future. American diplomats at various levels have repeatedly expressed their opinion on this matter - that for them the same Normandy format is not particularly interesting.
The invitation to Britain in this part looks strange from the point of view of Berlin, and Paris, and... and even Moscow. I think that this is an unacceptable option for all three countries.
The lack of initiatives to attract China or any other neutral or conditionally neutral countries into this format once again shows the imbalance of this format.
I think it was such an instinctive reaction. This was an attempt to actually abandon those models of negotiations that he (Zelensky) either inherited from President Poroshenko, or today are being imposed on him by other political players for the future,” Bortnyk concluded.
