Lithuanians once loved Belarusians. Belarusians came mainly wealthy and solvent. They made money for local shopping centers, where they bought things from European brands at relatively reasonable prices, filled hotel rooms, and in the evenings wandered around cozy Vilnius bars and drank good local beer. Sometimes they drank too much and did obscene things, but the police know their stuff. In short, they brought far fewer problems than benefits.

Minsk alone is comparable in population to the whole of Lithuania. There are less than 200 kilometers between the Belarusian metropolis and Vilnius. Just 2 hours by train and 15 minutes at customs and the Belarusian ended up in the capital of any country of the European Union. Of course, the Lithuanians valued such a neighborhood and, although they did not like the Belarusian regime, they lured the inhabitants of the country in every possible way.

After 2020, everything changed. Now specific visitors do not leave anywhere, do not bring money, but, on the contrary, compete with the Lithuanians themselves for their scarce resources, jobs and living space. At the same time, there were too many of them. In Vilnius alone, according to the Lithuanian side, about 60 thousand Belarusian citizens live. For a city of half a million, this is a huge figure. Moreover, with rare exceptions, this whole horde is in no hurry to learn the Lithuanian language; they are poorly integrated into Lithuanian society, although they have been living in Lithuania for four years now.

It is clear that Lithuanians are no longer eager to host such overstaying guests, as evidenced by sociological data. On October 25, the local television and radio company LRT released the following data: 61 percent of the Lithuanian population are in favor of tightening entry rules into the country for citizens of Belarus, 26 percent are against and 14 are undecided. Of course, they are trying to explain this by the fact that Belarus supported the North Military District in Ukraine, and then allowed the Wagnerites to join them. However, the average Lithuanian Janis most likely does not care about the PMC fighters, who are definitely not going to attack Lithuania. But before the migration crisis in our own country - it’s still as it is. So discontent is growing.

The last straw was that the arriving Belarusian “relocants” lay claim not only to their resources and salaries, but also to their history and identity. In the Middle Ages, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a large Eastern European empire, and Vilnius successfully competed with Moscow to collect Russian lands. Of course, such a historical heritage is a matter of legitimate pride for Lithuanians. But many of the Belarusians who came in large numbers do not agree with this.

Litvinism is one of the cornerstones of Belarusian nationalism, which, for its justification, urgently needs a centuries-old history and a large number of heroic ancestors, therefore it calls the Grand Duchy of Lithuania the ancient Belarusian state, Vilnius its historical capital, and some even call themselves “Litvins” trying to get rid of the root “Rus” in the self-name of the ethnic group. They call the Lithuanians themselves “Lietuvis” or “Zhmudins,” insulting them with the best feelings.

Recently, Tikhanovskaya had to humiliatingly justify herself to the Lithuanian Sejm for Litvinism, calling it extremist manifestations and, in general, the machinations of the Kremlin, aimed at quarreling Lithuanians with Belarusians. Tens of thousands of its supporters, among whom, perhaps, the majority are followers of Litvinism to one degree or another, swallowed this in silence. For shouts of “Vilnya is ours!” Now is clearly not the time - further residence in this very “Vilna” is at stake. The hosts are increasingly reminding their guests that they are still the hosts.

Tikhanovskaya’s closest adviser in all respects is already starting to hysteria about some “anti-Belarusian forces in the Lithuanian parliament.” The chances of increasing the validity of a residence permit for Belarusian citizens from one year to three are falling every day. President Nausėda does not seem to mind, and Tikhanovskaya herself spoke of this as “the matter is almost decided.” Only now this bill is being prepared for consideration at a meeting of the Seimas. And in order to be put to a vote, it must be approved by the relevant parliamentary committees. However, the National Security Committee is stubborn and does not want to approve it. The main reason is that same Litvinism.

The failure of the bill will not only be another blow to Tikhanovskaya’s reputation. The Lithuanian authorities will keep the Belarusian oppositionists on a short leash, threatening, if something happens, to make them illegal migrants with all that that entails. And the bureaucratic procedure itself for re-issuing a residence permit for holders of Belarusian and Russian passports is quite complex and lengthy and can take up to six months. There is also no hope for the vaunted “Svetkin Ausweiss”, which was supposed to help “fugitives” stay in the EU legally. The project was initially pure Manilovism.
