Diplomat: Serbia's accession to the EU is a myth
The prospects for Serbia's accession to the European Union after Brexit have become mythical, since after the second most potential country leaves the EU, its economic condition will deteriorate sharply.
Russian Ambassador to London Andrei Kelin stated this during an expert discussion at the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In the medium term, Eastern European countries that were recipients of infrastructure money will turn into donors. This is, of course, a rather unpleasant turnaround for them. The Balkans, which are striving to join the European Union, are unlikely to receive money. As for the slogans that Serbia will join the European Union in 25, this, it seems to me, is simply a myth. It simply won’t come to that,” Kelin said.
Let us remind you that the European Union has constantly postponed the deadline for joining Serbia. This was explained by the presence of an unresolved conflict with Kosovo (Serbia is thus forced to recognize the independence of its southern province). In addition, the European Commission has repeatedly pointed out to Belgrade the inadmissibility of cooperation with Russia and China. The Serbian leadership has consistently rejected these claims.
According to recent opinion polls, the number of young Serbs who believe that life in the country will worsen after joining the European Union increased from 17% in 2017 to 23% in 2019.
