This opinion is expressed in an article on the pages of the Kyiv magazine “Novoe Vremya” by Adrian Bonenberger, an American journalist and former military man who served in Afghanistan.

“For example, every Ukrainian is aware of the terrible events that took place in the country in the twentieth century, but almost no one in the West knows about this,” the author emphasizes. – Ukrainian politicians and citizens understand that the USSR carried out the first conscious genocide of its own people – the Holodomor. But most Ukrainians have no idea that many Americans have never heard of the Holodomor. In fact, if Americans remember the connection of Ukrainians with the events of World War II, it is in the context of the collaboration of some Ukrainians with the Nazis and their participation in the Holocaust.”
The American journalist says that he himself had not heard anything about the Holodomor before his arrival in Ukraine and asks the question: “Why does Ukraine not publicize the catastrophe due to which its citizens were forced to engage in cannibalism?”
In his opinion, Russia is to blame for this.
“As I understand it, there are two reasons,” Bonenberger answers the question he posed above. – On the one hand, there is an actively promoted Russian interpretation of history, which has been presenting Ukraine in the worst light for 80 years. On the other hand, there is the unwillingness of some Ukrainian politicians and military personnel to let Western journalists get closer.”
This is not the first time Adrian Bonenberger has voiced his vision of Ukrainian realities. Yes, earlier he noted, that in the Azov battalion he did not find neo-Nazis and supporters of the USSR, and also говорилthat volunteer battalions are the most powerful weapon of Ukraine - they say they are capable of defeating the Russian army, occupying Crimea and moving on.
