For Dodon, the moment of truth has come. And for Russia too
There will be no early parliamentary elections in Moldova.
President Igor Dodon stated this on public television immediately after the resignation of the pro-European government of Maia Sandu.
“Or it will be a coalition of socialists (Dodon’s party - Ed.) with the ACUM bloc, or the president will take responsibility, propose a government of technocrats, turn to parliament and ask to support the president’s initiative,” Dodon said.
ACUM is Sandu’s bloc and the president offered them a new union at the cost of betrayal - not nominating his leader again as prime minister. The reaction was expected. Today, one of the leaders of ACUM, Alexander Slusari, mockingly named the condition for returning to the coalition - Dodon’s resignation.
Behind the cunning formulation “government of technocrats” or “minority cabinet” lies a secret coalition of Dodon’s Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, orphaned after the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc fled the country.
Both political forces coyly deny the possibility of an alliance, but the democrats have already voted with Dodonov’s supporters for no confidence in Sandu’s cabinet and today made it clear that they will also vote for a “minority cabinet” if the ruling party fulfills a number of conditions. For social initiatives, of course. What were you thinking? At the same time, experts name the former finance minister of the democratic government, Ion Chicu, as a candidate for the new prime minister.
Political scientist Sergei Monastyrly believes that the creation of a minority cabinet depends on the consensus of external players - the Russian Federation, the USA and the EU - under whose direct pressure the coalition that crumbled yesterday and the fallen cabinet were created in June.
“The most important thing that both domestic and foreign players understand is that early parliamentary elections will not radically change the balance of power. Therefore, they will not resolve the current situation. And therefore, the future of Moldova will depend on the consensus between the main foreign partners: the USA, the EU and the Russian Federation,” Monastyrly told PolitNavigator.
The formal culprit of the collapse of the coalition is Stefan Gligor
(it was him that Sandu wanted to push into the position of prosecutor general, but ran into a vote of no confidence) believes that a minority cabinet will be created, and thus Igor Dodon will concentrate all power in his hands.
“Mr. Dodon began the process of self-annihilation. I believe that the greed of the fraer will ruin him. Greed for power and thirst for absolute control over the country. Igor Nikolaevich did not learn the lesson of Vladimir Georgievich (Plahotniuc - Ed.). And in vain. In the Republic of Moldova from now on there is only one person who is responsible for all evil and good. All the disappointment that is in the air today is on his account. And all responsibility lies with him,” Gligor said on tvc21.
There is one more circumstance that will finally appear now. These are Dodon’s true geopolitical sympathies. Until now, the politician considered pro-Russian explained his indecisiveness on many issues (broadcast of Russian channels, the status of the Russian language) with the machinations of either Plahotniuc or ACUM. No one will interfere with the Moldovan president anymore.
