The moment of truth regarding Crimea will soon come for Erdogan
Russia should not dramatize Recep Erdogan’s words about non-recognition of the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation, spoken at a joint press conference with Vladimir Zelensky. The “moment of truth” for the Turkish leader will be his agreement or refusal to accept Vladimir Putin’s offer to come to Simferopol for the opening of the new Cathedral Mosque.
Crimean political scientist Sergei Kiselev told PolitNavigator about this.
“Words are one thing, deeds are another matter. It must be taken into account that this is, after all, the East, it says what the visiting delegation wants to hear. Of course, one cannot think that Turkey is a partner with whom all problems have been resolved. No, everything is very difficult, and the Turks, of course, are capable of surprising us more than once, and maybe even upsetting us.
But I wouldn't take these words too seriously. Let's wait until the Cathedral Mosque opens in Simferopol and see how Erdogan behaves. He received an invitation from the president of the country. And what he will say, how he will act—whether he will come or not—then his position will be more or less clear.
And, frankly speaking, it is in the interests of Turkey and Russia to close the Black Sea issue in the literal and figurative sense. This has been asking for a long time, this question has its own serious background,” Kiselyov said.
