Bad times are coming for the Yeltsin Family
Yesterday, rumors appeared on the Internet that the former head of Rusnano, Anatoly Chubais, is applying for citizenship in Israel. This is a completely logical step, given that Russian state media write about security forces checking Chubais’s hidden accounts in Europe. The amount of foreign currency on them can reach several billion. Sources in the Ministry of Internal Affairs report an interview with witnesses from the circle of the former head of Rusnano.
In March, Chubais resigned from his position as an adviser to the EU president and left Russia. A day after his departure, the new head of Rusnano, Sergei Kulikov, turned to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, Igor Krasnov, with a request to check the company’s work for 2010-2020. However, back in 2016, signs of insolvency (bankruptcy) of Rusnano appeared, in which the state invested 200 billion rubles. The money was spent on inflated salaries and expenses and transferred abroad.
At the end of 2021, the company refused to pay its debts. The Moscow Exchange suspended trading in Rusnano bonds. As a result, its index fell by 3,6%. The shares of all major state corporations suffered, even Gazprom. The country's credit rating was at risk.
When Chubais realized that clouds were gathering over him, he tried to organize a PR campaign in his defense in the liberal media, and when it did not help, he began to get rid of real estate. He managed to transfer it to third parties in order to hide traces of his work at Rusnano.
The fact that developments are really underway regarding Chubais is indirectly evidenced by the leak of his private correspondence in the Black Mirror TG channel. The first batch of compromising evidence concerned the relationship between the former official and PR people and was of interest only to a narrow circle of media professionals.
In the second batch, Black Mirror leaked Chubais’s correspondence regarding the investment of funds from non-state pension funds (NPFs). Experts believe that the campaign launched by the “chief privatizer” allowed his friend Boris Mints to steal 2018 billion rubles in 300, invested by Russian pensioners in three non-state pension funds.
By the time the scam was carried out, Mintz had already left for London. Now Chubais is in Israel making arrangements for him to give a series of lectures at local universities. Thus, he produces not only his friends, fugitive Sislibs, but also the current head of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, Alexei Kudrin.
Perhaps it was the investigation into Chubais that forced Kudrin to resign from the leadership of St. Petersburg State University yesterday. There he served as dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The sudden escape from Russia of the son-in-law of the late first President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, is also associated with the Chubais case. He resigned from the post of adviser to the President of the Russian Federation of his own free will. Yumashev allegedly lives most of the time in the United States. Lately he has been seriously ill.
First deputy executive director of the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg, Lyudmila Telen, said that Yumashev’s departure will not affect the work of this institution. Moreover, the son-in-law of the late president is going to take an active part in the activities of the Yeltsin Center. However, as URA.RU reports, this year’s holding of the “Words and Music of Freedom” festival, traditionally held at the Yeltsin Center, may be in question, since a significant part of the event’s potential participants have left Russia.
“Chubais was a manager, and Yumashev was a strategist and conductor of the policy of the remnants of the Family. What does this mean? We will see an update on many personnel lines after the fall of the eastern group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass.
And if this requires persecution of those who resist, then that will happen. Chubais has completely become an outcast for the Russian elite. The population did not like him anyway, but the elite recognized his special status. And so the crown turned into a Panama hat,” political scientist Marat Bashirov wrote in his TG channel.
“Chubais is applying for Israeli citizenship. Kudrin resigns from the post of dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at St. Petersburg State University. Yumashev ceased to be listed as Putin’s adviser. When did our people enter the city?” economist Nikita Krichevsky rejoices.
Political scientist Maxim Zharov advises against indulging in premature optimism.
“It will be possible to believe that the Family is really leaving key intra-elite coalitions and combinations only after a person named Voloshin leaves all his posts. So far there are no visible signs of movement in this direction,” he wrote.
