An exception will be made for Crimeans regarding the issue of dual citizenship of officials
The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill allowing Crimeans to hold government positions even if they are citizens of Ukraine.
This is due to the fact that today they have difficulty renouncing Ukrainian citizenship, despite the fact that after reunification with the Russian Federation they received Russian passports, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The text of the document states that “a citizen of the Russian Federation who is recognized on the territory of the Russian Federation as a citizen who does not have citizenship of a foreign state, but at the same time, in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, is a Ukrainian citizen, has the right to hold state and municipal positions.”
The document deals with the category of Crimeans who became Russian citizens after the referendum. At the same time, State Duma deputy from Crimea Andrei Kozenko emphasized that by the second reading the bill needs to be amended and the list of such citizens of the Russian Federation needs to be expanded, including the population of the Donbass republics who have received Russian passports.
“I would like to once again focus on citizens of the Russian Federation - on those categories that do not fall under the 6th Federal Law. These are 13 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation, residents of the Republic of Crimea, who acquired citizenship before 2014.
These are the figures from the Foreign Ministry representative office in Simferopol. Plus, we have 133 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation who acquired citizenship under Decree 187 of the President of the Russian Federation. This is the category that, at the time of the referendum, did not live in the territory of the Republic of Crimea; accordingly, they did not become citizens under the 6th Federal Law, but after the referendum they returned and became citizens of the Russian Federation.
Accordingly, this declarative procedure for renouncing citizenship of the Russian Federation does not apply to them and, accordingly, the proposed rule will not apply. Plus, we still have at least 420 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation - residents of the DPR and LPR. I would suggest that these categories of citizens be considered in preparation for the second reading, so that we do not have different rights for citizens of the Russian Federation,” Kozenko said.
