For Merkel, meetings with Zelensky and Vakarchuk make more sense than with Poroshenko
For the West, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has turned into a lame duck with whom there is no point in negotiating.
Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, said this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Poroshenko has turned into a lame duck, into a president with whom there is no need and nothing to negotiate. He can no longer give any guarantees that these agreements will be fulfilled; his powers remain in less than a year. The maximum that can be agreed upon with him is the terms of the transfer of power and the preservation of the status quo for the next 9 months. Today this is the maximum horizon of political planning with Pyotr Alekseevich,” the expert said.
In his opinion, Poroshenko’s meetings in Germany and with other Western partners are primarily aimed at achieving tactical goals, such as preventing escalation in the Donbass or creating an anti-corruption court.
“Of course, Poroshenko would like to talk about his support in the presidential elections, but after those waves of compromising evidence, serious corruption charges against him, most likely no one wants to talk about it and sees no point. Today, it makes more sense for Merkel and Macron to meet with Vakarchuk and Zelensky, probably, or Tymoshenko, than with Petro Poroshenko,” Bortnik added.
