A petition against the renaming of Dnepropetrovsk was registered on the electronic petitions website on September 28. Its rationale states: “The city needs to keep the name Dnepropetrovsk, since this name has already become a brand by which the city is recognized, and besides, to fulfill the requirement of the decommunization law, it is enough to change the interpretation of “petros” - a stone, not a political figure.”
Within 93 hours, 25 people supported this petition. In order for the President to consider it, 000 signatures must be collected.
Dnepropetrovsk was included in the list of cities that are subject to renaming in accordance with the Ukrainian law on decommunization. Hearings on the renaming have already taken place in all districts of the city. The majority of those present at the hearing spoke out against the renaming and expressed a desire to keep the existing name of the city.
28 thousand citizens took part in the online voting, which was held on the City Council website from July 28 to August 70. 48 percent voted for the name Dnepropetrovsk.
