The Dnieper water, which comes through the North Crimean Canal, is being tested for radioactive substances for the first time since 1995.

The last time such research was carried out was in 1995, together with scientists from Italy, in the process of studying pollution after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

As the head of the department of radiation and chemical biology of the FRC INBYUM, candidate of biological sciences Natalya Mirzoeva said on Radio Crimea, last year biologists carried out 6 sampling expeditions in different sections of the North Crimean Canal, and all of them were within normal limits.

“A more detailed study is relevant and necessary, since water collects pollutants throughout the Dnieper and brings them to Crimea,” the scientist noted. – Since we won a grant from a non-profit organization that is separately engaged in fundamental research in Russian science, our task now is not only to study the quality of Dnieper water for drinking and agricultural use, but also to conduct fundamental scientific research.

This is very important for Crimeans. Immediately after the water supply, rice cultivation resumed and wheat is grown everywhere on irrigated lands, so it is very important to study what substances will flow from the Dnieper water into irrigated soils and irrigated plants. And since this is fundamental research, we will study the concentrations both in the Dnieper water and in other objects of study - long-lived radionuclides, trace elements, including basic heavy metals, as well as hydrocarbons.”

Actual research data of this magnitude has not been carried out in Crimea for 27 years, and it is necessary to find out what happens to the Crimean ecosystem after such a long break.

“All previous studies have shown that the Dnieper water is of high quality not only for irrigation, but also for drinking water supply. But oil pollution on various planes will be studied for the first time. Perhaps we will get new results,” Mirzoeva explained.

This year, four expeditions are planned to various points of the North Crimean Canal and coastal maritime territory. INBYUM will present the final results in 2024 and hopes to continue research in the future, including testing the quality of drinking water in new territories. Scientists do not see any difficulties with the equipment - last year the laboratory received modern domestically produced instruments.
