“A Ukrainian citizen who is on the international wanted list was found at the border checkpoint. At the request of Interpol, border guards detained him and placed him in a pre-trial detention center,” said border police spokeswoman Raisa Nowicki.

In a comment to the Moldovan media, the head of the Moldovan Interpol bureau, Viorel Centiu, said that Yakovenko was put on the Interpol wanted list by Belarus.

He confirmed that Minsk authorities accuse the Ukrainian deputy of bribery and corruption and have registered a request for his arrest and extradition.

Yakovenko entered the Ukrainian parliament in 2019 as a self-nominated candidate; he won constituency No. 52 in the Donetsk region.
