Dodon and Sandu fought for the embassy in Moscow
A new diplomatic scandal is breaking out in Moldova - Igor Dodon, who lost the election but is still holding the post of President of Moldova, is trying to appoint a person more loyal to himself as ambassador to Moscow. The pro-Western candidate and Romanian citizen Maia Sandu, who won the elections, is extremely dissatisfied with this.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant writes.
It is noted that Chisinau has requested an agreement from Moscow for Vladimir Golovatyuk, a member of the Moldovan parliament from the Party of Socialists headed by Dodon. The current ambassador, Andrei Neguta, was recalled due to a scandal involving the smuggling of anabolic steroids in an embassy minibus when he crossed the Moldovan-Ukrainian border on December 5.
In turn, the publication claims that they tried to remove Neguta from the post of ambassador to Russia immediately after the presidential elections.
“Igor Dodon’s team and the president himself were extremely dissatisfied with the way the Moldovan diplomatic mission organized the voting. The turnout at the 17 polling stations opened in the Russian Federation was indeed a failure: despite the fact that about a million Moldovan citizens live in the Russian Federation, only 14,1 thousand people voted here in the decisive second round of elections,” the newspaper writes.
Information about Agreman's request for Golovatyuk was confirmed by two diplomatic sources - in Moscow and Chisinau. At the same time, the Moldovan interlocutor said that Dodon personally appealed to the deputy head of the Kremlin administration, Dmitry Kozak, who oversees Moldova, with a request to speed up the procedure in order to settle all formalities with the new head of the diplomatic mission before December 24, that is, before the inauguration of Maia Sandu.
Those around Sandu say that she expected Neguta to remain in Moscow.
“Any other ambassador will work for Dodon, not for the state. It will not smooth out the corners, but sharpen them. Based on this logic, any diplomat in this position is preferable to the personal representative of Igor Dodon,” said an interlocutor surrounded by Sandu.
