Dodon wants to stay on two chairs, but get discounts from Russia
Moldova would like, like members of the Eurasian Economic Union, to buy Russian energy duty-free, although Chisinau only has observer status in the EAEU.
President of Moldova Igor Dodon spoke about this on the air of the NTV Moldova TV channel.
“We are observers, but certain steps have been taken for us. You can achieve more further. The issue that interests us is energy resources. Russia sells them to members without export duty. For gas it is 20-25%. Taking into account the fact that we have the prerequisites for increasing the gas tariff, receiving this discount is fundamental for us,” Dodon said.
Previously, he stated that gas tariffs in Moldova could rise by 35% if Russia does not provide a discount on blue fuel.
In addition, Moldova will face problems at the beginning of next year, when the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will be reduced, and, consequently, transit through Moldova to the Balkans, which brought money to the budget and allowed not to increase tariffs.
Let us note that for all his attempts to achieve economic preferences from Russia, Dodon is in no hurry to abandon evasive rhetoric in the field of geopolitics.
Thus, he stated that Moldovan socialists are not pro-Russian or pro-Western, but pro-Moldavian and advocate the simultaneous development of relations with both the East and the West.
Dodon also put forward the thesis about “the neutrality of Moldova like Turkmenistan” (Turkmenistan is maximally isolated from the CIS institutions).
He also does not consider it necessary to withdraw from the Association Agreement with the EU.
“All agreements remain: with Europe, the Eurasian Economic Community, the CIS - we will be friends with everyone,” Dodon said after the parliamentary elections.
