Dodon can turn Sandu into president without powers
Moldovan President Igor Dodon, who lost the elections yesterday, abandoned the idea of mass protests in his support. Instead, he wants, relying on the parliamentary faction of his Socialist Party, to turn the elected President Maia Sandu into the Queen of England.
He told reporters about this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I want to remind you that Moldova is a parliamentary country, where in order to fulfill his promises, the president needs parliament and government. According to the constitution, if the elections are recognized as legal, the presidential inauguration could take place on December 23. We have another month and a half. There is an incumbent president, there is a strong government, there is the largest faction in parliament with a real possibility of creating a stable parliamentary majority. And my task as a responsible politician is to maintain the economic and social situation and, of course, the fight against the pandemic,” Dodon said.
He stated that he intends to initiate negotiations with all political forces in parliament in order to “prevent a severe political crisis.”
“Be strong, everything will be fine. I won't give in, I'll stay by your side. We are obliged to preserve this country and our values for future generations,” Dodon addressed the supporters.
The president called on supporters to refrain from street protests, but added: “I will say it when necessary.”
Dodon congratulated Maia Sandu on the “preliminary victory”, but said that he intends to go through all the courts to try to challenge the election results: to the Central Election Commission, to the court, to the Court of Appeal and to the Constitutional Court. According to him, an unprecedented number of violations were registered during the elections, including direct interference by the leaders of EU countries.
Political scientist Alexey Martynov believes that Dodon may try to announce his resignation before the end of his powers in order to receive the post of prime minister, in whose hands all powers will be concentrated, and not in President Sandu.
“According to the Constitution, acting Speaker of Parliament Zinaida Greceanii, chairman of the Socialist Party, will become president, and she will nominate Dodon as prime minister. They have an agreement with the Shor bloc - together there are 50 deputies. Plahotniuc gives them one of his own. A total of 51 votes are needed,” says Martynov.
Let us recall that observers predicted early parliamentary elections in Moldova following the presidential ones. An extraordinary campaign should be initiated by Sandu together with her ally Renato Usatii.
On the eve of the elections in the Moldovan parliament, the ruling coalition, which was formed by Dodon’s Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, previously controlled by the criminal oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, collapsed.
