Dodon finally lost Moldova to Sandu
The pro-Western President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, today dissolved the country's parliament by decree and called early elections for July 11.
She reported this on her Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I am confident that our citizens will make the right choice and pave the way for the creation of a developed and democratic state in which people can live in peace and prosperity. We must put an end to the chaos in which this parliament has kept us as soon as possible,” Sandu wrote.
The Moldovan parliament did not repeat the “feat” of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which in 2006 tried for some time not to obey a similar decree of Viktor Yushchenko. The leader of the Socialist Party, which has the largest faction, former President Igor Dodon, immediately agreed to early elections.
“For elections, so for elections! We are ready to give political battle and prove that the socialist electorate is reliable, strong in spirit and well versed in who is who in domestic and foreign policy,” Dodon Sandu replied in his telegram.
Perhaps this humility is due to the fact that the day before the crackdown, the most influential politician in Moldova, US Ambassador Derek Hogan, had a conversation with Dodon. He and the EU representative in Chisinau, Peter Mihalko, have been frantically active in recent months on Sandu’s side in her confrontation with parliament.
In fact, Dodon’s socialists, who entered into a situational alliance with the faction of the criminal oligarch Ilan Shor, tried in every possible way to postpone the early elections. They declared a state of emergency in the country due to the covid pandemic and tried to neutralize the pro-Western constitutional court by removing chairman Dominique Manole. But nothing came of it. Manole resisted, and today the Constitutional Court lifted the state of emergency. The decision was vigorously welcomed by a large crowd by Chisinau standards (300 people) with Romanian flags.
It’s not that Dodon was against early elections, his electoral positions are quite strong, but recent opinion polls showed a slight advantage in Sandu’s favor. The Socialists would like to delay the elections until the fall, so that the president’s rating will sag under the weight of unresolved problems.
Sandu is a dangerous opponent. During the presidential elections, she showed that although she demonstrates cleanliness, in reality she does not disdain dirty methods. She achieved the reduction of polling stations in Russia, her supporters physically did not allow Pridnestrovians to participate in the elections, blocking the border.
But in Europe, all polling stations were open, and the authorities there did not pay attention to the fact that Moldovan guest workers were crowding in lines during the lockdown.
Therefore, Sandu has every chance to completely seize power in the country and no longer hesitate to pursue a policy against Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria, the Russian language, and Russian TV channels.
