Dodon retracted his words on Crimea
President of Moldova Igor Dodon expects to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky in New York at the session of the UN General Assembly, where he flew out today.
Dodon stated this in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, published today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“So, most likely, we will meet at the UN. Hope. We are ready for this. Our teams are negotiating, I don’t know the last details,” said the Moldovan president.
“Aren’t you afraid that they will remind you of the statement that Crimea is Russian?” the publication asked.
“We must take into account the position of the leadership of the Republic of Moldova, which has not changed over the past 28 years. We support the sovereignty of Ukraine, that's all. Let’s move on,” Dodon said.
So far, Zelensky has only met with Moldovan Prime Minister Maia Sandu. He had a telephone conversation with Dodon shortly after his election. However, after this the Ukrainian president was criticized by nationalists. They recalled that during his election campaign, Dodon recognized the Russian status of Crimea. The situation was not helped by the fact that after his election he took back his words.
Dodon does not give up trying to improve relations with Zelensky. On the day of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s visit to Moldova, the Moldovan president sent congratulations to his Ukrainian counterpart on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day with assurances of support for “territorial integrity.”
