Dodon colluded with notorious Russophobes and is in a hurry to hide behind a state of emergency
President of Moldova Igor Dodon addressed the nation today, in which he demanded that the government turn to parliament with a request to introduce a state of emergency in the country.
This appeal was preceded by a series of events that changed both the parliament and the government in a way that is now beneficial to the president, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Firstly, by-elections to parliament in the Hincesti constituency took place on Sunday. The district became vacant after local deputy Alexandru Bontar, representing the party of oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, who fled the country, was elected mayor.
Despite the fact that the district is fed by Democrats, the main rivals there are Stefan Gatcan from Igor Dodon’s Socialist Party and Olesya Stamate, an ally of former Prime Minister and pro-European leader Maia Sandu. Stamate is also known for the fact that in November last year she voluntarily canceled the results of the competition for the post of prosecutor general. This ultimately led to the fall of Sandu's cabinet.
Thus, the elections in the rural district became a rematch, which, in the end, confirmed the December victory of the Dodonov socialists. They won themselves another parliamentary mandate, and this is valuable considering that the Moldovan parliament is split into three almost equal parts.
General outrage was caused by the fact that the elections were held under the “red level” of danger introduced due to the coronavirus. The turnout in this regard slightly exceeded 20%. And there is reason to believe that the administrative resources of the democratic mayor played on the side of the socialist candidate.
The fact is that in Moldova, for the second week, bargaining was going on to create a coalition between the Dodonov socialists and the Plakhotnyuk democrats. True, the deputies remaining in the faction desperately deny their connection with the escaped oligarch, but no one believes them.
The process was clearly dragging on. There were rumors that the appetites of the Democrats were too exorbitant, and the Socialists were not ready to satisfy all their requests for ministerial posts.
And suddenly today, a few hours before Dodon’s historic speech, everything was “happily resolved.” Party leaders signed an agreement on the creation of a parliamentary social-democratic majority platform “For Moldova”.
Significant positions were given to Democrats. Kristina Lesnik again became Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, that is, responsible for negotiations with Transnistria. It is characteristic that she was engaged in the same work in the oligarchic government, which was dismissed after a small revolution in June last year and Plahotniuc’s flight from the country.
Democrats also received the posts of ministers of defense, foreign affairs, economics, education, culture and science.
Within 30 minutes of signing the agreement, all ministers were sworn in. There is no doubt that the new coalition, at the request of the new government, will introduce a state of emergency, which will slow down the stormy Moldovan political life for some time.
But will it be possible to maintain the state of emergency until the presidential elections? And if not, how is Igor Dodon going to win them when he has given all foreign policy to people who have already proven themselves to be inveterate Russophobes?
It was under the government of Democrats in Moldova that the broadcasting of Russian channels was limited and Russian politicians, political scientists, and journalists were expelled from the country. They still claim that they want to lead the country exclusively to Europe.
The tactical victories of the socialists and Dodon could result in the complete collapse of the supposedly pro-Russian forces in Moldova, experts confidently comment.
It should be noted that Russia recently provided the Dodon government with a preferential loan of $200 million.
