Dodon flew to Moscow to beg for a discount on gas
President of Moldova Igor Dodon will visit Moscow today to meet with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak.
He spoke about the purpose of his visit in an interview with the Accent TV Programm channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Receiving a discount from Gazprom.” I promised this more than once. We have already begun preliminary negotiations with the Russian leadership. The goal is to get a discount for 1 months from September 1 to January 4. I won’t give numbers, but I think it’s quite realistic. This will be a step on the part of the Russian Federation in support of the new government: the president, the government, the speaker. Then there are chances either not to raise gas prices at all, or for this increase to be symbolic. There will be clarity on this issue by the end of July or mid-August,” the Moldovan president hopes.
He blamed the previous government for the catastrophic situation with gas supply in Moldova.
“There is a problem, and it’s big. Because at the end of last year, when it was necessary to maintain tariffs or even slightly increase them, the previous government gave instructions to reduce tariffs in order to try to win the parliamentary elections. They acted on the principle: if we win, we’ll sort it out; if we don’t win, that’s their problem. They tried to plant a bomb under us, but they wouldn't succeed. We will solve this problem,” Dodon said.
He also promised to mobilize internal reserves by eliminating all shadow schemes in Moldovagaz. On the eve of the trip, Dodon nominated his longtime associate Vadim Cheban as director of Moldovagaz. He will also take part in the negotiations.
