President of Moldova Igor Dodon will try to prevent early parliamentary elections in the country or delay them until the fall of 2020.

He stated this on air on the NTV Moldova television channel, promising to reconcile his party of socialists and the pro-Western bloc Acum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“As president, I will do everything to prevent early parliamentary elections. My task is to reconcile them. It’s not easy, because some people’s ego and ambitions are off the charts. If the parties do not agree, then it is better to hold early parliamentary elections together with the presidential elections in the fall, so as not to fool people and not have so many costs,” Dodon said.

He explained that Prime Minister Maia Sandu has the opportunity to avoid the resignation of her cabinet. To do this, she must withdraw her bill on the election of prosecutor general. It was his faction of the Socialist Party, of which Dodon is the informal leader, that considered it unconstitutional and therefore submitted a vote of no confidence in the government to parliament.

“Maia Sandu scored an own goal because she came out with an initiative that no one would support. She received a yellow card; if she doesn’t withdraw it, a red card will follow. If the government does not withdraw its initiative, it will be dismissed next week. There are no other options,” Dodon said.

The President believes that the probability of the government's fall is 95%. At the same time, he hopes that even after his resignation he will be able to form a new government within the 45 days provided for by law in order to avoid early elections. Dodon called on his supporters not to take to the streets. He hopes that the ACUM bloc will do the same so as not to aggravate the situation.

Let us recall that Dodon’s Socialist Party and the pro-European ACUM bloc created a coalition in June under pressure from Russia, the USA and the EU in order to oust the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc from power. At the same time, ACUM almost completely controlled the government.
