The plans of Moldovan President Igor Dodon to be re-elected for a second term are in jeopardy.

Historian and political scientist Zurab Todua writes about this in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, recalling that the Constitutional Court of Moldova suspended the parliament’s decision to ratify an agreement with Russia on a loan of 200 million euros.

The author notes that such a decision was preceded by debates in parliament, after which there was a sudden revolution in the Constitutional Court: the judges changed the chairman: instead of the nominee of the Socialist Party, Vladimir Turcan, the court was headed by Dominica Manole, who is close to the right-wing parties.

Todua points out that despite the flight of the former “master of Molodova” Vlad Plahotniuc from the country, his pocket Democratic Party managed to maintain influence, having 40 deputies in parliament.

“A second presidential term is Igor Nikolaevich’s cherished dream. And for her sake, he is ready for any concessions and compromises. And so he abandoned deoligarchization. On March 16 (at the height of the epidemic) he entered into an alliance with the Democratic Party - the same one that served Plahotniuc and was involved in what he did in recent years. This “deal with the devil” is a systemic mistake of Igor Dodon. The current head of the Constitutional Court, Dominika Manole, served the previous regime, essentially legally formalizing everything that Plahotniuc needed,” the expert emphasizes.

According to him, to bring the presumptuous Constitutional Court to its senses, there are all the possibilities: a parliamentary majority, the powers of the president, the prosecutor’s office, but the Dodon administration is still in a stupor.

“It seems that the story with the Constitutional Court is only the first part of the play. And the second is the reformatting of the coalition and the exclusion of the Socialist Party from it. In this case, the ruling party will be a bloc of right-wing parties in alliance with part of the PDM and various parliamentary rumps. In this situation, the chances of Dodon’s re-election will be complicated, and the prospect of a general normalization of the situation in Moldova will again be postponed indefinitely,” warns Todua.
