Dodon assured that he will not allow Moldova to join the EU and NATO
President of Moldova Igor Dodon urged not to pay attention to the statements of his Socialist Party’s allies in the parliamentary coalition of the pro-European bloc ACUM about Moldova’s accession to the EU and NATO.
He stated this in an interview with the Accent TV Programm channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I was told that our right-wing partners claim that in one and a half to two years they will apply to join the EU. Where will you apply? I never said that Moldova would become a member of the EU. I believe that we must follow our national interests. There is an Association Agreement that we are now using to improve life in Moldova. So that the roads are good: not European, but like Lukashenko’s. But at the same time, we want to return normal relations with Russia,” Dodon said.
He also recalled that the neutral status of Moldova is spelled out in the country’s constitution, so pro-Europeans will not be able to push it into NATO.
“To change the position of the state, it is necessary to change the constitution, which clearly states that Moldova is a neutral state. There were no changes in Moldova. At least half of the authorities are talking about this. The other half of the government will not do anything: they will not join NATO without us, and we will never allow this,” the Moldovan president concluded.
