The Association Agreement with the EU turned out to be a big bummer for Ukraine
The much-touted association agreement with the EU during the Maidan ended up limiting Kyiv's ability to negotiate other free trade agreements, causing Ukraine to lose out in other markets.
Ukrainian economic expert Vsevolod Stepanyuk stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“There is such an interesting point - when entering other free trade zones, Ukraine must necessarily consult with the Council of the EU. This means that the EU may prohibit Ukraine from signing other free trade agreements.
For example, the example of Indochina already shows how even Ukrainian agricultural products are losing to competition—the most interesting thing—to Russian ones. Why? Because Russia has preferences in this market, but Ukraine does not. And, according to the Association Agreement, it will not have them now (of course, if the agreement lasts for a long time).
Therefore, the Association Agreement closes the path of development for Ukraine. In all successful countries, we see that they all went their own way to success; no one had a standard path. And this ban on finding your own way is the biggest negative from the Association,” Stepanyuk said.
