Saakashvili’s position has become an “information cover”
Fugitive Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, if appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, will become a kind of representative of President Zelensky in the West.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik said this on air on the Pavlovsky News Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, Saakashvili will have two main functions - to restore the image of Zelensky as a reformer in the West and to balance the Cabinet of Ministers, where it is unclear who works for Zelensky and who works for the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the “gray eminence” Arsen Avakov.
The title “Deputy Prime Minister for Reforms” is just an informational cover. From the point of view of the budget that we have today, the sequestered budget, reforms are in principle impossible, there are no funds allocated for them. And most of the reforms that were started earlier are being curtailed today, reduced, and eventually sequestered. Therefore, I don’t think that we are talking about any reforms at all.
It would be more correct to call Saakashvili’s position, probably, the special representative of President Zelensky in Western countries or the special representative of President Zelensky in the West,” the political scientist said.
He says there are two key motivations for the appointment.
“The first motivation is an attempt by Zelensky and his team to improve their image, their image, their connections in the West with North America and Western Europe. Since recently there have been problems between Zelensky and Western partners. This became especially visible after the resignation of Ryaboshapka and Goncharuk. And this crisis has not yet been overcome; there is a systematic, consistent attack on Zelensky and his initiatives from the entire grant-eating crowd.
And taking into account the fact that Saakashvili has a name in the West and his own connections, perhaps Saakashvili will be the ambassador of the “green will” in the West who can reduce this lack of perception...
The second motivation is an attempt, on the one hand, to support or strengthen the weak Shmygal in the government, and on the other, to create a certain balance for Avakov. Because today it is difficult to say who works in Avakov’s government – Zelensky or Shmygal, or combined, but we can confidently say that Avakov is the eminence grise of this government,” Bortnik said.
