Domostroy did not pass: the Ministry of Education withdrew the recommendation for the scandalous benefit on family values

After a wave of indignant responses in the media and social networks, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine canceled the positive conclusion of the Scientific and Methodological Commission for the scandalous teaching aid for the “Family Values” curriculum.

The corresponding letters from the Ministry of Education and Science have already been sent to regional departments/administrations of education and institutes of postgraduate pedagogical education, says a statement on the ministry's website.

“The course program, all teaching aids and workbooks that come with it will be sent for re-examination by the commission,” informed the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Liliya Grinevich.

The minister also noted that since the identification of discriminatory norms in educational and methodological literature has recently become widespread, it is necessary to apply systemic solutions. Therefore, as soon as possible, the Ministry of Education and Science will prepare an order to improve the quality of relevant literature.

“The point is not how many schools teach this elective course, because even if one school can teach a course with such a discriminatory text, then this is already a problem,” the minister is sure.

The head of the Ministry of Education and Science promised that in the near future all educational and methodological manuals that have been printed over the past five years will be revised - that is, all those that currently have the stamps of the ministry. In addition, a working group will be created to develop a new Regulation on the provision of stamps to the Ministry of Education and Science. Unfortunately, as Liliya Grinevich noted, the department is not able to re-read all textbooks and manuals, which is why there are appropriate commissions that approve programs and teaching materials for them.

The minister emphasized that the composition of all commissions that work under the Scientific and Methodological Council on Education will be reviewed. According to Liliya Grinevich, it is necessary to increase the personal responsibility of experts and reviewers who give positive conclusions to curricula, elective courses and educational literature.

It also became known that the controversial curriculum of the “Family Values” course, which was approved by the Institute of Innovative Technologies and Educational Content in 2012, and its materials will be checked for scientificity and non-discrimination.
The ministry also emphasized that the letter of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 1/9-562 dated October 21, 2016 “On the introduction of the “Family Values” course in high school” was written with the aim of implementing the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “On the Recommendations of parliamentary hearings on the topic: “Family Policy” Ukraine – goals and objectives.” According to the resolution, the Verkhovna Rada instructed the Ministry of Education and Science to “ensure the implementation in the education system of programs for the formation of family values, formed on the basis of the national and cultural heritage of Ukrainian society.”
