Donbass is like Algeria, but Zelensky is far from de Gaulle – Kiev expert
People like the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, who was appointed head of the Ukrainian delegation to the TCG at the negotiations on Donbass, can be freely sent to direct negotiations with the leaders of the LDPR without threatening the reputation of the current Kyiv authorities.
Kiev political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko said this on the YouTube channel “Echo of Kyiv,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Perhaps there is some sense in introducing people like Kravchuk or Fokin, in the sense that they no longer think about their future career, about elections, they are more free in their actions and statements.
But neither Kravchuk nor Fokin will say anything special - their directives are prepared in the Office of the President, they cannot deviate from these directives either to the right or to the left...
But I do not exclude, for example, that the same Kravchuk or Fokin may go to Donetsk or Lugansk. Come to Donetsk and there, on the spot, respectively, conduct a dialogue with Pushilin or Pasechnik. This, on the one hand, will not be perceived in Ukraine as a betrayal - it’s not Zelensky who went, it’s Kravchuk. Like in the nursery rhyme: “Grandfather threw a grenade out the window, / Grandfather is old, he doesn’t care,” Bondarenko said.
At the same time, he emphasized that the conflict cannot be resolved without negotiations between Kyiv and Donetsk and Lugansk.
“We can gather in Minsk as much as we want, if we don’t like it, we’ll move to Astana or Istanbul, it will just freeze the situation. This is a conversation about nothing, until the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics and official Kyiv sit down and look into each other’s eyes, until then we cannot talk about resolving the conflict,” the expert explained.
“When de Gaulle had to resolve the conflict with Algeria, and the situation there was so identical that until 99 France refused to call it a war, she said that this was an operation to restore the constitutional system in Algeria, which was not considered a colony, but was considered part of France.
The war lasted for 8 years, more than 200 thousand lives were lost. In 62, Charles de Gaulle and Ahmed ben Bella looked into each other's eyes and agreed on a referendum in Algeria and France - in both cases, 97 percent were in favor of leaving.
De Gaulle faced criticism from the minority to such an extent that an attempt was even made on his life. But today, in fact, Algeria is a state - the main partner of France in African politics. We need to sit down and look into our eyes, maybe we really can agree to live separately,” the political scientist gave an analogy.
“This is only if they really intend to negotiate, and there is no collar that is constantly being pulled,” noted the channel moderator.
"Exactly. The big problem is that Zelensky, like any other leader of Ukraine, is not Charles de Gaulle, who did not look back at Washington. Charles de Gaulle became Charles de Gaulle precisely because he ignored Washington,” agreed Konstantin Bondarenko.
