Donbass does not feed Ukraine: coal production has collapsed by 22%

Kyiv, February 10 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Semenyuta) – Coal production in Ukraine in 2014 decreased by 2013% compared to 22,3 – to 65 million tons. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry.

The production of coking coal, which is used in metallurgy, decreased by 32% - to 16,1 million tons, thermal coal (used in the energy sector) by 18,5% - to 48,9 million tons. Consumption of coal products in Ukraine during 2014 decreased by 16,4%.

In 2014, Ukraine lost its status as a coal exporter. According to relevant minister Vladimir Demchishin, 66 mines producing anthracite coal are located on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR). “Because of this, we have to buy coal, in particular, from Kazakhstan and Russia,” the official said.
