The director of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS Countries Denis Denis Denisov said this in a commentary to Moskvossky Komsomolets, answering the question whether Russia’s attitude towards the DPR and LPR will change after the local elections.
“As far as I know, Russia is establishing economic and political ties with these republics,” the expert noted. – There are no prerequisites to say that Moscow will begin to pay less attention to them. Entire departments are being created in Russian ministries that are responsible for interaction with the DPR and LPR, and their activities will only intensify. In the end, if Ukraine implements all the Minsk agreements, it will turn into a confederation, which means that Donetsk and Lugansk will independently build their foreign economic relations. At the same time, Kyiv does not have much choice: either it must make such concessions that the residents of the DPR and LPR will feel comfortable as part of Ukraine, or it must abandon Donbass.”
