Donbass Consensus: Never in a Ukraine like this
The main unifying idea of Donbass is that in today’s nationalist Ukraine, residents of the rebel republics have nothing to do. Russian and Ukrainian experts came to this conclusion during a discussion on the TVC channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is a significant group that believes that the place of Donbass is in Russia. And they didn't change their point of view. There is another group that says that in principle a new Ukraine could be considered if it changes radically and becomes a normal state. And these two groups are united by one thing: we will under no circumstances go to “this” Ukraine. We will live as we do now, but we will definitely not go beyond the demarcation line - this is an absolute consensus,” said political scientist Dmitry Kulikov, the program’s host.
“When did Ukraine become “like this”? – asked Russian political commentator Igor Vittel.
“I think since the spring of 2014,” answered Ukrainian expert Pogrebinsky.
“Until the spring of 2014, the nationalist radical anti-Russian opposition was supported by no more than 18-20 percent of the population. Now this figure has been supplemented by people who are not natural Ukrainian nationalists, but who received a certain bias after certain events. Now there are 35 percent of them, up to forty, and it is on them that the main group of presidential candidates is counting today - Poroshenko, Tymoshenko, Gritsenko. They are fighting for this 35-40 percent,” added the Ukrainian political scientist.
