Interest in Donbass in Russia seems to be turning from political to purely humanitarian, the publication writes. At yesterday's meeting of the Public Committee for Support of the South-East of Ukraine, statements were made that the rebellious regions should remain part of it - albeit with the possibility of broad autonomy.

Neither in his speech nor during the press conference, President Vladimir Putin never uttered the words “Novorossiya”, “DPR” or “LPR”, emphasizing in every possible way that what is happening in Donbass is an internal Ukrainian conflict, the newspaper writes. And this did not go unnoticed by the militia.

The Federation Council - following the Kremlin - made it clear to the militias that they would have to improve relations with official Kiev. “We have always stated that the best option for Donbass is autonomy within Ukraine, with federalization and the preservation of Russian as the second state language,” Senator Sergei Mamedov told NG, emphasizing that the agenda has become more positive.

Speaker of the Novorossiya Parliament Oleg Tsarev does not rule out curtailing the Novorossiya project and his own activities in the Donbass. When asked by NG how he sees his future, Tsarev replied: “Taking into account the fact that my house and business have been seized by Kolomoisky’s people, I will have to start my life all over again at 44 years old. Maybe I’ll go to Crimea and do business.” Tsarev noted that Russia’s mistakes were caused by an insufficient understanding of Ukrainian realities: “It was necessary to rely on public opinion, which had to be formed, and not on specific politicians.”

“By the end of next year, the problem of Donbass must be resolved by Ukraine. Either peacefully or by force. Otherwise, Ukrainians simply won’t understand this government and will want a new one,” Konstantin Kalachev, head of the Political Expert Group, told NG. “Russia needed the DPR and LPR only as a key to Ukraine, as a tool for solving the Ukrainian problem, but they are unlikely to create a second Transnistria.”

According to the expert, the Kremlin will strive for an exchange: “The temptation to hang the topic of rebuilding Donbass on Ukraine and thus complicate its path to Europe is very high. So the fighting has now been replaced by a war of nerves.”
